Indianapolis is home to a number of war memorials that honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The Indiana War Memorial is the most prominent of these monuments, located in downtown Indianapolis. It is a complex of monuments, museums, and parks that commemorate the service of Hoosiers in all wars and conflicts. The Indiana War Memorial includes the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial, the Indiana World War II memorials, the Korean War and Vietnam War memorials, and the Museum of Military History. This museum portrays the military history of Indiana from the Revolutionary War to more recent conflicts such as the Gulf War and War on Terrorism. The Pro Patria statue is located on the southern steps of the monument.
The Latin inscription translates to “For the Country”, which accurately conveys the message of patriotism and sacrifice that is represented by this memorial. The Congressional Gold Medal is also on display at the Indiana War Memorial Museum. This medal was awarded to the crew of USS Indianapolis for their service during World War II. In accordance with state regulations, visitors must wear a face covering inside the Indiana War Memorial and Museum.
